Former media mogul Tom Freston joined My First Million to detail his chaotic pre-television career, explaining how he went from running an import business in Asia to being completely broke at age 33. Freston detailed how geopolitical crises destroyed his clothing venture, saying, "in Afghanistan there had been a communist coup-That kind of drove me out of there, and then I doubled down on my business in India."
According to Freston, his efforts to hustle through local disruptions were ultimately cut short by Jimmy Carter, who "put us out of business because he put an embargo, not a tariff, but an embargo on clothing imports from India." Left with nothing, he wound down the business and turned to the classic self-help book 'What Color Is Your Parachute?' to figure out his next move.
That pivot led him directly to the birth of MTV. Freston recalled his humble beginnings at the network, noting, "I got hired at M-- the company that would become MTV and MTV Networks in, uh, uh, March of nineteen eighty." He started with a salary of just $35,000, a modest sum for a man who would go on to shape global youth culture.
