The original American warehouse chain Price Club remains defunct, its legacy long since absorbed into Costco, even as its brand name lives on through international entities like the Philippines' Puregold Price Club. Despite its absence from American strip malls, the pioneer of membership shopping is still generating conversation in the podcast world as a historical curiosity.
On the podcast No Such Thing As A Fish, host Andrew Hunter Murray brought up the brand's mid-century origins. "So there's a one... There's a chain that started in the seventies in the USA, and it's called Price Club," Murray explained, highlighting the retail giant founded by Sol Price.
While some listeners find comfort in the nostalgia of early bulk-buying, retail analysts remain split on whether Price Club's original model is still relevant. Some argue that Sol Price's formula was a product of its time, while others maintain that modern giants have simply copied his homework without adding anything new.
As warehouse clubs continue to adapt to the e-commerce era, expect Price Club to keep popping up in trivia segments as the grandparent of the modern supply chain.
