Former IRS Special Agent Brendan Banfield has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2023 murders of his wife, Christine Banfield, and 39-year-old Joseph Ryan. On 48 Hours, host Anne-Marie Green reported that Banfield was found guilty of murdering his wife and Ryan "inside the Banfields' Northern Virginia home in twenty twenty-three." The case, dubbed the "Au Pair Affair" due to Banfield's relationship with nanny Juliana Perez Magalhaes, saw Magalhaes plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter after she "cooperated with the government."
On Dateline NBC, correspondent Rachel Depompa laid out the chilling mechanics of the setup. Investigators discovered that Banfield and Magalhaes had "used Christine's photo and her name on a fetish website to try and lure Joseph to the Banfield house" under the belief that he was going to have "consensual sex with Christine." Instead, he was executed. Though Banfield originally claimed to police that he "walked in on Joseph stabbing Christine, and he shot him to try and protect her," the elaborate cover story quickly fell apart under scrutiny.
The sheer cruelty of the plot drew fierce condemnation during the sentencing hearing. Fairfax County Circuit Judge Penny Azcarate lambasted Banfield for "scheming for months a master plan involving so many moving parts," which included "luring a completely innocent man into your deadly trap." With Banfield now ordered to spend the rest of his days behind bars, the tragic saga of how Joseph Ryan was used as a pawn in a deadly game has finally reached its legal end.
