YouTuber-turned-filmmaker Curry Barker has officially broken into the mainstream box office with his horror film, Obsession. The project secured theatrical distribution after generating massive buzz at the Toronto International Film Festival, marking a massive transition from internet comedy to cinema screens.
On The Indicator from Planet Money, host Wailin Wong highlighted Barker's unconventional path to Hollywood success. Wong noted that Barker is an "aspiring-... young actor who started making comedy videos with a friend" before pivoting to DIY horror production.
According to Wong, Barker and his creative partner built a massive online following on YouTube before releasing a "full-length horror movie that they put on YouTube for free." That initial internet experiment paved the way for Obsession, which made such a splash that he picked up a distributor and secured a "bonafide box office hit."
Barker's success represents a major shift in how indie horror finds an audience. By bypassing the traditional gatekeepers, he has set a new playbook for other online creators looking to make the leap from viral comedy sketches to legitimate theatrical releases.
