Mental health advocate Cohen Miles-Rath joined Dax Shepard on Armchair Expert to discuss his recovery and his new memoir. Shepard introduced him as "a mental health advocate and speaker" who wrote "a firsthand account of someone who had a psychotic break, um, a schizophrenic episode, uh, that resulted in them trying to kill their father."
Miles-Rath detailed his release from jail after 30 days and his proactive approach to community rehabilitation. Reflecting on his mandatory treatment plan, he admitted, "I was very hesitant on doing that," before explaining how he eventually embraced the structure: "I didn't even need to be told to do that. I was, like, all about it. I was like, 'I'm gonna take full advantage of all these resources in my community.'"
The conversation also focused on his medical recovery, specifically how he manages his daily dosage of Zyprexa. Miles-Rath explained that while he still takes the medication, his nurse practitioner "has, at some point, an idea to potentially wean me off." Shepard closed the intimate interview on a warm note, saying, "Well, Colin, so nice meeting you."
As Miles-Rath continues his book tour, his transparent dialogue about psychosis, medication, and family reconciliation is setting a new standard for how mental health struggles are discussed in mainstream media.
